Betty Louise Hill

Betty Louise Hill. Read it again ... Betty ... Louise ... Hill. Sounds like such a nice name, doesn’t it? Well this name holds a lot more than the nice read it gives you. This is the name of a woman who had an unforgettable smile, was kind-hearted, loving, caring, and, above all, CLEAN. Yes, Betty was one heck of a clean freak. Everything in its place, and a place for everything. Before anything went to its “place,” it was wiped down with Lysol (also her old CB handle), polished with Liquid Gold, and most likely put back next to a mothball.

When she was done cleaning her house, she moved onto her son’s or outside to tend to her beloved flower garden. She had quite the energy when it came to keeping her house in order. Even in her later years, she could be found nailing shingles on her roof, painting her second-story awnings and pulling weeds on the bank next to speeding traffic (how she never got run over is amazing).

Let’s not forget to mention her cooking. WOW, that lady could cook! She had a way of making everything melt in your mouth. She could fry pork chops to perfection and bake pies with just the right shortness to the crust. The woman lived on coffee — nothing fancy, just coffee made in her old percolator with a tiny shot of creamer. This and the love for her family is what fueled her (but probably more the coffee).

Born on May 10, 1925, in Ritchie County, to James Clark and Nellie Putnam Middleton, Betty grew up on the family farm and met the love of her life, who lived across the meadow. She married Russell William Hill on Nov. 30, 1947, and the two welcomed their only child, James Russell Hill, in 1948. A devoted wife and mother, Betty was employed at Westinghouse and then Owens-Illinois Glass Co. in Fairmont, where she retired in 1980.

On Oct. 7, 2013, Betty, 88, earned her angel wings. Known as “Mammy” to her family, she is survived by her son, Jim; granddaughter, Heather Shae Hill (Shae baby) and partner Brogan Rose; granddaughter, Autumn Nicole Hill (Autie Nicole) and partner Matthew Rush; and three great-grandchildren, Katie Pasquarelli, Hunter Morgan Rush and Deegan James Rush. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and her only brother, Grover Clark Middleton.

A sincere thank you to the staff at WVU Healthcare for the amazing care given to Betty and compassion shown to the family during this difficult time.

Betty was laid to rest next to her husband at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, in Morgantown. during a private family service and entrusted Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, with the arrangements.
