— Ward Leslie Byrd, 86, of Worthington, passed away Friday (June 21, 2013) at Fairmont General from an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 13, 1927, in Shinnston, the son of the late John Byrd and Laura Barkley Byrd.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen R. Starcher Byrd, whom he married Aug. 25, 1966.

He is survived by two sons, Kevin Byrd of Worthington and Mark Glover of Worthington; one daughter, Kim Glover Ice and husband Tom of Carolina; one grandson, Jay Ice and wife Amanda of Idamay; one sister, Ruth McIntire of New Martinsville; along with several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Byrd; two sisters, Olive Morgan and Edna Wright; and one grandson, Jeremy Ice.

Ward was a coal miner of 31 1/2 years at Robinson Run for Consol Coal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 31 of Shinnston and a Methodist by faith.

There will be no public viewing or visitation. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Pastor Brian Plum officiating. Full military services will be conducted by Harrison County Color Guard Post 573 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
