Lura Moore

Lura Pearl (Phillips) Moore, 100, of Fairmont, passed away on Saturday (Aug. 3, 2013) at Home Away From Home Nursing Center in Grafton.

She was born in Barbour County on June 14, 1913, the last surviving child born to Morgan Phillips and Augusta Lee (Hebb) Phillips.

Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie William Moore, in September of 1977.

She was a homemaker and mother and a lifelong active member of Mt. Harmony Church. She served in many positions with the church as well as a member of the choir.

Lura was a driver and driver coordinator for the Marion County Cancer Drivers for many years and was honored as Driver of the Year many times. She was a member of the Fairmont Chapter No. 34, Order of the Eastern Star and the Marion County Senior Citizens Fun Band. In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, gardening and crafts and playing Scrabble and rummy.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Moore and his wife Mary Ann of Fairmont, Johnnie L. Moore and his wife Georgiene of Greensburg, Pa., and James Douglas Moore and his wife Deborah of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Jean Squires of Fairmont; a son-in-law, James Goodwin of Fairmont; 11 grandchildren, Terry Lee Pratt, James Goodwin II, Stephen Squires, Stephanie Mosley, Mary Beth Ciocca, William R. Moore II, Melissa Bogac, Roger Allen Moore, Randy Goodwin, James D. Moore Jr. and John Michael Moore; 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosa Lee Goodwin; a son-in-law, Henry Squires; her brothers, Roy Phillips, Ray Phillips, Carl Phillips, Kenneth Phillips and Walter Phillips; and her sister, Delphi McDaniel.

Friends may call at the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. on Tuesday and 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday. The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ruth Hall officiating. Interment services will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Chapter No. 34 Order of the Eastern Star will hold a ritualistic service at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
