Robert “Bob” George

Robert “Bob” George of 2734 Husky Highway, formerly of Mannington, passed away Thursday (Dec. 12, 2013), at home after a short illness.

He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Clarksburg. He was the son of the late Ira W. George and Nellie Mae Richards George.

Bob retired from Westinghouse Electric and Philips Lighting with 38 years of service. He worked as a maintenance machinist and was very active in the union and welfare work having been union steward, an executive board member and treasurer of the Social and Welfare committees.

Bob was a lifetime member of the A.F.L.C.I.O. Local 627.

He was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and attended Fairmont State College, where he represented Local 627 on the Fairmont State Scholarship Committee for several years.

Bob was a 32 Mason, belonging to Mannington Masonic Lodge No. 31, the Clarksburg Scottish Rite Lodge and the Wheeling Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection. He was also a member of the OSIRIS Temple A.A.N.M.S. Shrine, past president of the Upper Monongahela Valley Shrine Club and played in the Oriental Band for 35 years.

Bob was given several awards during his lifetime. including Shriner of the year 1981, Honorary Kentucky Colonel and Distinguished West Virginian.

During WWII, Bob served in the U.S. Army European Theater. He took part in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day (first wave), the capture of Ramegan Bridge and the Battle of the Bulge. Bob was awarded five battle stars, Bronze Arrowhead, French Quax de Qare, Good Conduct Medal and the Presidential Unit citation. His job was driving the Amphibian truck called the DUKW, and he was a member of the 460th Amphibian DUKW unit that has a reunion every year in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., to commemorate D-Day. He was proud to serve his country.

Bob was married to the late Joan Metz George, Dec. 25, 1946, and was married for 55 years. They have one daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Mark Morris of Mannington. He has three grandchildren, Earl Morris of Fairmont, Brian Morris of Mannington, and Jackie (Johnathan) Denham of Fairmont. He also has four great-grandchildren, Austin and Kayla Morris and Jaxon and Jordan Denham.

Bob married Betty Fluharty George Oct. 28, 2003. He has one stepson, Mac Fluharty of Mannington, five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by five sisters, Carrie (Clyde) Longshore, Lareda (Ray) Prunty, Gloria (Bill) Fluharty, Carol (Wendall) Parker and Lorain George (infant); also three deceased brothers, Frank, Bernard and Bill George.

Bob was a Christian by faith and was a member of the First Christian Church of Mannington, where he had served as Sunday School teacher and as an Elder for over 40 years.

He liked to garden, play golf, and listen and dance to country and western music. Bob liked to help people and worked every Wednesday at the Mannington Food Pantry. He was a hard worker and always said that he wanted to make this world a little better place by being in it. Well done, my good and faithful servant.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to noon Monday. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Masters Funeral Home in Mannington followed by burial at Mannington Memorial Park. Officiating will be Pastor Lynn White of The First Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to The First Christian Church of Mannington, P.O. Box 66, Mannington, WV.

The family would like to thank HOSPICE Care, Inc. of Fairmont for all their kindness, care and support.

Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Marion County Veterans Council and the U.S. Army.
