James Floyd Sr.

James O. Floyd Sr., 83, of Fairmont (Watson Community), passed from this life Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2013), at the Tygart Center Nursing Home.

He was born in Fairmont on Feb. 28, 1930, a son of the late Howard and Lucinda M. Rice Floyd.

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and a third-degree member of the Marian Council No. 942 Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served one year in Korea. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a plumber, and worked at Fairmont State University for over 30 years.

Jim was an avid sports fan, and during his tenure at Fairmont State, served as the ticket taker for the basketball games. He had coached Babe Ruth League baseball for several of his younger years. He and his wife really enjoyed watching the Pirates and the Steelers, and were major fans of the Mountaineers.

More than anything else, he really enjoyed his family, dancing with his wife, daughters and granddaughters or playing with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was classified by his family as being the closest thing to the perfect “Popie” as any man could possibly be.

Mr. Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 59½ years, Dolores Slate Floyd; two daughters, Debra Piscura and her husband Bob of Draper, Va., and Maureen Floyd-Roy and her fiancé Henry Parrish of Fairmont; one son, James O. Floyd Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Morgantown; eight grandchildren, Gina Piscura and husband Brandon Herndon, Casey Piscura, Luis Piscara and fiancée Joy Canchola, Erica and Mark Roy, Lesli Reddish, Brittany Floyd and fiancé Joseph Nevera, and Morgan Williams and husband Christopher; five great-grandchildren, Noah Rios, Oliver Rison, Joey Nevera, Ariana Piscara and Bella Morrison, and two on the way; also several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, Robert, Wilbert “Tinker,” Howard and Harry Floyd; and one sister, Ella Louise Van Meter and her husband James.

Mrs. Floyd has requested that memorial donations be made in Jim’s name to the: Korean War Veterans Memorial, P.O. Box 8054, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Jim’s family would like to say a special “thank you” to the third-floor staff at Fairmont General Hospital, the staff at the Tygart Center and the Marion County EMTs.
