Shirley ‘Short’ Smith

Shirley “Short” Smith, 85, of Bridgeport, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 26, 2013) at United Hospital Center.

He was born May 27, 1928, at Lamberts Run, Harrison County, a son of the late Wayne C. and Beulah Riddle Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jessie L. Gross Smith of Bridgeport; his daughter and son-in-law, Brenda J. Smith Wise and Jeff Wise of Newcomerstown, Ohio; his sister and brother-in-law, June Smith Milkovich and husband Steve of Fairmont; two grandsons, Bryan Fasig and his wife Connie of Parma, Ohio, and Kevin Fasig and his wife Kelly of Medina, Ohio; one great-grandchild soon to be born; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Mark Smith.

He retired from J.F. Allen, where he was employed as a heavy equipment operator. He loved his family and enjoyed watching old western shows and listening to his favorite musician, Waylon Jennings.

Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, with a funeral service at 1 p.m. with Pastor Cindy Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
