Lemon Cowger

Lemon Edward Cowger, 87, of Reubens Run Road, Fairmont, passed away Monday (March 10, 2014) at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Webster County on Jan. 8, 1927, a son of the late James Adam and Sirena Eliza (Forinash) Cowger.

Lemon proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from May 1945 to October 1946 in the 88th Blue Devil Division. He was a coal miner by trade, retiring in 1987 from the Loveridge mine. He attended Winfield United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sharing and Caring Group at Fairmont General Hospital and a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed farming, raising Hereford cattle, and squirrel and deer hunting.

He loved people and never met a stranger. Not only did he love his immediate family and their families, but his extended family as well. He was very proud of his entire family and loved them all immensely.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 68 years, Maxine Marie (Neel) Cowger of Fairmont; two sons, Ralph Edward Cowger and his wife Margaret, and Roy Leo Cowger and his wife Susie; three daughters, Beverly Jane Collins and her husband Kenton, Karen Sue Tatterson, and Terry Lynn Morris and her husband Kevin, all of Fairmont. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren he was extremely proud of and affectionately referred to as “The Dirty Dozen”: Greg Collins and his wife Kelly, Robin Riffle and her husband Mike, Cindy Riffle and her husband Randy, Daniel Tatterson, Sarah Holmes and her husband Wes, Scott Cowger and his wife Nina, Tina Cowger, Joshua Cowger, Amanda Loar and her husband Brent, Justin Morris and his wife Amber, Megan Morris and Brooke Morris. He also loved his two step-grandsons, Robert Tatterson and Todd Tatterson and his wife Davy, as well as his 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd E. Cowger Sr., Lambert Cowger, Delbert Cowger and Raymond Cowger; five sisters, Pearl Cowger, Bessie Cogar, Tessie Williams, Clara Ammons and Virginia VanGilder; a son-in-law, Robert “Bobby” Tatterson; and a great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Renee Loar.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday with Pastor Bob Barker and Pastor Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Fairmont, where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

The family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors at Ruby Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion for Lemon. Also, a special thanks to his personal nursing team: Sarah, Kelly and Nina.
