Pervis Bates

— On Friday (May 3, 2013), LTC Pervis M. Bates Sr, 97, passed away peacefully at home in Randallstown, Md.

He was born to the late Eugene and Katie Bates in Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 24, 1916.  

He was a graduate of West Virginia State College where he was an All-American, Hall of Famer and member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

His career started at Howard High in Piedmont as both teacher and coach.  

He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years and was a decorated officer and Purple Heart recipient.

After retirement, he moved to Baltimore, Md., where he was a teacher and vice principal throughout various schools in Howard County, Md.

He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Baltimore since 1967, where he was a trustee and co-chair of the BUILD Committee, which provided housing for many African-Americans in Baltimore City.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary A.H. Bates; son, Pervis (Bua) Bates Jr.; grandchildren, Rahsaan K. and Persis S.D. Bates, Lashawna Black, Orawan Sanitkhum and Suraphuan Noonnak; great-grandchildren, Naliya and Anyssa Sanitkhum, Leo, Loe and Ole Noonnak; brother-in-law, William Holloway; special cousins, Frank and Bernice Beaird; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by Eugene and Katie Bates (parents), Alfred and John Bates (brothers), Viola Bates (sister), Denise A. Bates Echols (daughter), Gladys Bates and Melinda Holloway (sisters-in-law), Donald and John Bates Jr., and Fred “Jimmy” Holloway (nephews).

He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with a service the day before at Union Baptist Church, 1219 Druid Hill Ave., Baltimore, MD 21133. The dates are not set yet, but you may check www.unionbaptistchurch.com (410-523-6880) for times (approximately 14 weeks).
