Ernest Dale “Ernie” Nicholson, 89, of Fairmont, passed from this life Tuesday (March 25, 2014), under Hospice Care after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born in Dellslow on July 20, 1924, a son of the late Thomas L. and Mintie Mayfield Nicholson.
Ernie was a Christian by faith. He had formerly worked as a coal miner, a machine operator at Mundle Machine Shop, at Bloic Electric, and he retired as a circuit board painter from Electric Control Systems. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 629.
He enjoyed reading, playing his guitar, working word puzzles, and was an avid Mountaineer and Steeler fan.
Mr. Nicholson is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Bonnie Lee Mullins Nicholson; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Shipley Jones and Randy Jones of Fairmont; a former daughter-in-law, Susan Gaus and her husband Ron of Fairmont; a brother-in-law, Jim Shingleton of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Kenneth Nicholson and wife Dana, Brian Scott Nicholson and Tammy, Barry Nicholson, Tammy Royal and Eric, and Gary Shipley and Cindy; also six great-grandchildren, Mildred, Destiny and Tiffany Nicholson, Kelsea Royal, Brianna Shipley and Marissa Jenkins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Dale Nicholson and Dallas Nicholson; his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Anna Lee Nicholson; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Josephine and Harry Cottrill, Betty and Donald Fisher. and Wilma Shingleton; also one grandson, Shawn Michael Shipley. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Ernie’s family would like to thank Hospice Care, and especially his nurse, Lisa Moore, and his dialysis unit for all of their care and support through his illness.
In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated, and there will be no funeral home visitation or service.
