— Nelda Brand Hawkins, 95, of Bridgeport and formerly of Fairmont and Palm Harbour, Fla., passed away at her residence Friday (March 29, 2013).  

She was born Nov. 8, 1917, in Barrackville, a daughter of the late E. Dent Brand and Sarah Wilson Brand.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 43 years, Frank R. Hawkins, who passed away Dec. 2, 1981.

She is survived by one daughter, Joan Slamick and her husband Paul of Bridgeport; four grandchildren, Paula Jo Foy and her husband Duane, Mary Elizabeth Hall and her husband Gerald, Joseph Slamick and Jeremy Slamick; four great-grandchildren, Bailey Foy, Sydney Foy, Koltin Smith and Brianna Slamick; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Brand Loudin Hood; and her brothers-in-law, Dennis Paul Loudin and Arthur Hood.

Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of Barrackville High School and the West Virginia Business College. She was employed as an administrative secretary for Fairmont State College until her retirement in 1978. While serving in that capacity she was the private secretary for three Fairmont State College presidents.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the St. Ignatius Care Club for Shut Ins as well as the St. Ignatius Choir in Florida. In addition, she served as a volunteer worker for 15 years in Tarpon Springs, Fla. She enjoyed knitting, reading and listening to classical music as well as a fan of the big band era. Her favorite artists were the Glenn Miller Band, Chopin, Beethoven and Brahms. She was an avid sports fan, enjoying watching many sporting events on TV, especially tennis.

A special thank you to her friend, caregiver and adopted granddaughter, Tara Bunnell, who is her grandson Joseph’s fiancée. The family also would like to thank Dr. Michael Hess and Father Hilarion Cann.

Family and friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday. Catholic rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Father Hilarion V. Cann presiding. Interment will be in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport.
