Linda Lea Smith

Linda Lea Smith, 64, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home Monday (April 1, 2013).

Linda was born in Fairmont, on Oct. 24, 1948, to Chester and Stella Konopko. She met the love of her life (William Smith of Weston), and they were married Sept. 13, 1980.

Linda was a loving military wife, stay-at-home mother and dedicated grandmother and great-grandmother. Linda loved painting, reading, writing stories and spending time with her family.

Linda will be greatly missed by all. She was a very special lady and was blessed with many friends who were special to her.

Linda is survived by her loving husband, William Smith; daughters, Tina (William) Mathews and Cathy (Tony) Cornell; grandchildren, Karrie (Ceeton) Pfantz, Michael (Chelsea) Mathews, Dairrian Mathews and Christopher Hanson; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Kaedence Huffman, Jordan and Madison Mathews, and Audrey Hanson; sisters, Jeanne Mahalick and Catherine Cain; and brother, Chester Konopko Jr.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Stella Konopko, and grandson. Dustin Taylor.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday prior to the funeral services 2 p.m. at Ford Funeral Home. DeGarmo Chapel, 2nd Street, Rivesville, with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the family in loving memory of Linda. Please make checks payable to William Smith.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
