— Anna Vigna, 90, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully on Monday (April 1, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital with her daughter and granddaughters at her side.

She was the daughter of the late Pete and Anna Sopuch of Farmington.

Anna retired from the Fairmont Box Co. with 27 years of service. She was instrumental in the formation of the first union there and served as a union stewart. After her retirement, she continued to work, first at the Gee Bee’s Department Store at the Middletown Mall, and then she joined the Marion County Senior Aide Program, working at various places which include the Salvation Army, Region 6, the Social Security office and the John Manchin Health Care Center. She worked on this program until age 84.

Survivors include her only child, a daughter, Patricia and son-in-law James Gardi of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Annamarie and Bill Smerka of Westover, Roxanne and Michael Perry of White Hall, James Gardi Jr. and partner Amy Payne of North Carolina, and David Gardi of Fairmont; nine great-grandchildren, Billy Smerka Jr., of Westover, Michael Perry II and wife Emily of Vienna, Ryan Perry of Fairmont, Elizabeth (Gardi) Young and husband Matt, Kayla Gardi and Macie Grace Gardi, all of North Carolina, Brielle Gardi, Joel Gardi and Chandler Gardi, all of Fairmont; and a great-great-granddaughter, Adelyn Grace Murray of Fairmont; one brother, Harry “Brother” Sopuch and wife Becky of New Jersey; one sister-in-law, Ella Frances Sopuch of Farmington; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by brothers, Steve, Albert, Frank, Joe and John Sopuch; one sister, Jenny Keister; and one sister-in-law, Anita Sopuch; a great granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Gardi; and her daughter’s father (her ex-husband), James Vigna.

Anna was affectionately known as “Nanny” by her family and many close family friends. She was always “on call” and gave generously of her time.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ruby Memorial Hospital (9 East) for their support during her last days. A special thanks to her “aide and friend” Gloria, all her aides and others at Fairmont Family Services of Marion County.

Family and friends may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Anna chose to be cremated, and her ashes will be handled according to her wishes.
