Evangelist Earl P. Stevens

FAIRMONT — Evangelist Earl P. Stevens, 85, of Fairmont, died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2011) at the Genesis Health Care Center in Fairmont.

He was born Nov. 21, 1925, the son of the late Elton Alva and Mary Elizabeth Stevens, in Bovina, Miss.

He graduated from Carr Central High School in Vicksburg, Miss. He was a graduate of Abilene Christian College, where he majored in Bible and received his Ph.D. from National Christian University (College of the Bible).

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist 3rd Class — neuropsychiatric technician.

He married Vonda Jean Tuttle on Aug. 7, 1949, and they enjoyed 61 years of life together.

Earl served the Lord as a Gospel preacher for 70 years for the Church of Christ. He held full-time ministries in Olden, Texas, Barrackville, Camden Avenue in Parkersburg, Dewey Avenue in St. Marys, Pleasant Avenue in Shinnston, Mount Nebo near Fairmont, and Pleasant Valley, Fairmont.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Stanley; two brothers, Elton Stevens Jr. and Marshall Stevens; and two sisters, Mary Frances Hopton and Neva Mae Stevens, who died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, Vonda; one brother, Marion Stevens and his wife Marilyn of Madison, Miss.; one sister, Rosalie Stevens of Jackson, Miss.; one daughter, Teresa Darlene Stevens of Fairmont; two sons and spouses, Steve and Karen Stevens of Hundred, and David and Kathy Stevens of Canal Winchester, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Douglas Stanley, Rebecca Wilson and her husband Erik, Melissa Rush and her husband Rex, Jonathan Stevens, Stephanie Stevens, Victoria Stevens, Roy Stevens, Aaron Stevens, Adam Stevens, Rachel Stevens and Scott Stevens; one great-grandchild, Malina Rush; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ with Evangelist Steve Stevens and Evangelist David Stevens, sons of the deceased, officiating. Internment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens. Military flag-folding honors will be conducted at graveside by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
