Vernon Downey

Vernon Brox Downey, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday (Nov. 23, 2013) at Reeders Memorial Home in Boonsboro, Md.

Born near Rosedale, he was the son of the late Spencer and Effie Hope Downey.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Downey. He is also survived by two daughters, Carole Downey of Baltimore, Md., and Janice Downey of Hagerstown, Md.; three sisters, Shurleen Griffin, Monoka West and Arella Prunyi; a sister-in-law, Marianne Buckley; and many nieces and nephews.

He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force from 1946-47 and received the Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal of Japan.

He graduated from East Fairmont High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State College in industrial arts in 1950 and his master’s degree from Stout State College, Wisconsin, in 1956. He completed his doctoral course work in industrial education from Pennsylvania State University.

He was a drafting/industrial arts teacher at Hagerstown High School from 1954-56, and then moved to South Hagerstown High School as a drafting teacher from 1956-1982. He was an evening drafting instructor at Hagerstown Junior College from 1954-71. After retirement, he continued with contract drafting work.

He was a private pilot and member of the Southern Engineering Society, Stamp Club, No. 131 Flying Group, Aircraft Association Chapter 35, AOPA, Experimental Aircraft Group, Maryland Retired Teachers, AARP, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown, and American Legion Funkstown Legion Post 211.  

He enjoyed flying, stamps, traveling, watching Orioles and gardening, his beloved dogs and most of all enjoyed time with his family, friends and the Thursday evening dinner group.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. C. Michael Henning will officiate.      

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1301 York Road, Suite 404, Lutherville, MD 21093; or Humane Society of Washington County, 13011 Maugansville Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
