Everett Fast

FAIRMONT — Everett Lee Fast, 80, of Fairmont, passed peacefully from this life in his home Sunday (March 10, 2013) after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born in Fairmont on May 16, 1932, a son of the late James Poe and Aurora Brown Fast.

Everett retired from the B&O Railroad with more than 35 years of service. He had worked in most of the positions including conductor, brakeman and engineer. He was a member of Mount Harmony Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 629. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in Korea.

He enjoyed playing golf, shooting pool, bowling, playing solitaire and working cryptograms. He was an avid North Carolina Tar Heels fan and enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys and the Mountaineers.

Mr. Fast is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Frank Rigger of Newport, Mich.; his brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Eleanor Jo Fast of Fairmont; his granddaughter, Monica Mulligan and her husband Christopher of Riverview, Mich.; two great-grandsons, Ryan and Brandon Mulligan; one great-granddaughter, Courtney Mulligan; three nieces, Sandra Tonkery and her husband David, Joyce Hughes and her husband David, and Katlyn Grimm; one nephew, Keith Grimm; and a special cousin, Virgil Rogers of Grafton, who was like a brother.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 18 years, Irene “Polly” Fast; his sister and her husband, Ruth and George Grimm; and one nephew, Ralph Fast Jr.

Everett’s family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 122 S. High St., Morgantown, WV 26501.

Friends may call at Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. Services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Ruth Hall officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens with full military honors being presented by the U.S. Navy and the Marion County Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
