Darrell Dawson Sr.

Darrell K. Dawson Sr., 71, of Farmington, passed away Saturday (July 20, 2013) after a battle with several health conditions at the CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston.

Before his health began to decline, Darrell loved to travel, which may be a result of his earlier years when he served in the U.S. Air Force Security Forces as an air policeman for 13 years.

During active duty, Staff Sgt. Darrell Dawson was stationed in Texas, California, Taiwan, Greece, Alaska and Florida.

He was considered a “Man’s Man.” He enjoyed WVU football, fishing, meeting new friends and telling stories.

Darrell is survived by his four children. His youngest, Darrell Dawson Jr. and his wife Chrissy, reside in Fairmont with their two children, Gavin Dawson and Kali Campbell. His eldest daughter, Trina Skidmore and her husband Ronald, are residents of Morgantown. Trina’s daughters, Tonya Atha and Ashley Graffius, live in Fairmont with Darrell’s six grandchildren, Kirsten Kuniyoshi, Alexis Kuniyoshi, Austin Atha, Jeremiah Hurd, Addyson Boone and Levi Graffius.

Darrell’s daughter Twila Doub is also a resident of Fairmont, along with her two children, Candice and Andrew Doub. His youngest daughter, Angela Kriston and her husband Joe, reside in Fairmont, as do three of her children, Amanda, Latisha and Brandon Kriston.

Darrell was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sasha Kriston.

Darrell was born in Anmoore to the late Dexter and Leah Dawson. Dexter and Leah had six children including Darrell. They decided to give all their children names that started with the letter “D”: Deloris, Dexter “Junior,” Darrell, Darlene, Dwayne and Dennis.

Darrell was preceded in death by both parents; and a sister, Deloris Pappas, and her husband, Jim.

He is survived by his older brother, Dexter Dawson Jr. and his wife Judy of Glen Burnie, Md.; his sister, Darlene Koontz and her husband Terry of Bridgeport; his brother, Dwayne Dawson and his wife Sandra of Hilo, Hawaii, and his brother, Dennis Dawson and his wife Judy of Grafton.

Darrell also is survived by many nieces and nephews, whom he adored.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday.    Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Bert Coffman officiating. Burial will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown. The Marion County Veterans will observe full military honors at the graveside.
