Mike Tonkovich

Mike Tonkovich, 86, of Farmington, died Friday (July 26, 2013) at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 28, 1926, at East Run, a son of the late Matt and Helen Tonkovich.

Mike was a coal miner, having retired from Consol Energy’s Four States No. 20 Mine with over 40 years in the mining industry. He was a farmer and outdoorsman who loved hunting, gardening and working his farm. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and spent much time writing journals.

A veteran of the United States Army, Mike served his nation during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the St. Peters Catholic Church in Farmington.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Tonkovich, whom he lovingly referred to as “Babe.” Also surviving are four children, Michael Tonkovich and wife Pam of Fairmont, Thomas Tonkovich and companion Mary Stewart of Farmington, Dede Feltz of Fairmont, and Jackie Copenhaver and husband Brent of Morgantown; eight grandchildren, Jimmy Feltz and wife Chasta of Hedgesville, Talia Feltz of Fairmont, Courtney Tonkovich of Bridgeport, Samuel Tonkovich of Fairmont, Norah Copenhaver of Morgantown, Andy Copenhaver of Ohio, Eric Copenhaver of California and Andy Carter of Morgantown; two great-grandchildren, Preslynn Feltz and Jordan Witherspoon; two sisters, Helen Mazzei and Ann Oliverio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Luke, Joe, John and Steve Tonkovich; two sisters, Katy Mullenax and Mary Tonkovich; and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew Tonkovich.

The family would like to thank all who helped them during Mike’s illness and ask that memorial donations be made to HospiceCare in Fairmont.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington today from 1:30-8 p.m. The Rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 6 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Peters Catholic Church in Farmington with Rev. Father Douglas B. Sutton as celebrant. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Farmington.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
