Betty Cunningham

Betty L. Cunningham, 91, of Baxter, passed away peacefully Tuesday (Sept. 24, 2013) in the Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Monongah, a daughter of the late Mary Caroline Malick. She was raised by her Mommy and Poppy (her grandparents), Joseph and Katherine Malick.

Betty was very active with the Baxter Ball Park with her husband, Paul, in the 1960s and ’70s. She was well known for her hot dog sauce at the Baxter ball games. She was also a member of the Baxter Homemakers.

Betty was Catholic by faith and a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church of Fairmont.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Jerry Hess of Baxter, Betty Jean and Bob Yokley of Morris Siding, and Sandy and Rocky Gearde, with whom she made her home, of Baxter; and her “adopted son,” Louie Summers of Baxter. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Rick and Debbie Hess of Fairmont, Jeff Hess of Baxter, Dave Hess of Fairmont, Tom and Lark Dunbar of Morris Siding, Kelli Cunningham of Fairmont, Willie Wells Jr. of Baxter, Brittany Gearde and Eric Morrison of Monongah, Chelsea Gearde and Ron Sheets of Fairmont, and Haley Gearde and Jimmy McGinty of Baxter. Great-grandchildren are Trish Bray, Rick Hess, Jarod Hess, Justin Hess, Landon Phillips, Erika Bailey, Tommy Dunbar, LG Broadwater, Meaghen Broadwater, Dayton McVicker, Tanner Barnes, Mayson Morrison and Cori McGinty; and two great-great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Carpenter and Zepplin Broadwater. She is also survived by three special nieces, Paula Ciumedean, Linda Bartic and Barbara Halliday; and two special friends whom Mom thought of as daughters, Donna Hearn of Baxter and Suzanne Holloway of Decatur, Ga.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ray Cunningham; her daughter, Judy Cunningham-Wells; and a very special sister, Edith Bartic.

Mom or Nan, as a lot of people called her, was a very special lady that will be missed by many.

A very heartfelt thank you to Dr. Menez and girls for the special care for Mom and always being there for her. Dr. Menez, Kelly, Barb, Linda and Angela, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You all are the best!

Also, a very special thank you to Louie Summers for the care you gave Mom at home. She thought the world of you!

Mom, I love you so much! You were my world. I love you — Sandy. This is not goodbye. I will be seeing you again!

The family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, 207 Second St., Rivesville, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. today with Deacon David Lester officiating. A graveside service will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
