John Shreves Sr.

John Arnold Shreves Sr., of Fairmont, died on Saturday (Oct. 5, 2013) at the Louis A. Johnson Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.

He was born on Sept. 12, 1935, in Fairmont, a son of the late Joe Cephus and Viola Ayers Shreves.

 John worked for several years at Sharon Steel and Alcan. He served in the United States Army and was a member of the Masonic Lodge Acasia No. 157. John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving caregiver and companion, Jane Sherman, and her son, Chris Sherman; two sons, John A. Shreves Jr. and his wife Deborah Ann, and Michael T. Shreves and his wife Laura, both of Fairmont; one daughter, Jean E. Maglott and her husband John, of Florida; one brother, Bobby Joe Shreves, of Fairmont; one sister, Barbara Ansel, of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Johnson, Rachel Nathaniel, Jonilyn Maglott, John Arthur Maglott, Amanda Danielle Mauck, Christopher M. Shreves, Olivia Shreves and Allyson Shreves; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Shreves and Ira Shreves; and one brother-in-law, Jack Ansel.

Friends may call the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. today. Funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Tim Shuttlesworth officiating. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the local Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
