Arthur Puskas

Arthur “AP” “Sonny” Puskas, 84, of Grant Town, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 8, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 27, 1929, in Grant Town, son of the late Arpad and Rose (Harry) Puskas.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Leona Puskas; two children, Arthur Lee Puskas and wife Susan of Leesburg, Va., and Kathy Ann Puskas of Grant Town; his half sister, Margo Ujheghyi of Hackensack, N.J.; his aunt, Helen Harry Patton of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and a brother, James E. Puskas of Shawnee, Kansas. Uncle AP is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Franklin Puskas; a brother, Frank J. Puskas; his stepmother, Josephine Puskas; and his stepbrother, George Bogdanich. He was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Joe Honce, Fred Heard and Jess King; one sister-in-law, Jennie Heard; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Arthur was a devoted, kind and generous husband, father and loyal friend. He was a 1947 graduate of Fairview High School, where he was a member of the varsity football and basketball teams. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army. serving as a corporal with the Military Police, and spent his last year of service in Guam. He later graduated from E.T.I. in Trenton, N.J.

He then returned to his wife and hometown, where he started his radio and TV repair business. Arthur later went on to establish one of the earliest CATV systems in Marion County and surrounding communities. He retired from TV after 30 years. He later retired from Eastern Associate Coal Co. after 23 years with the local union No. 4047. He was also employed for six years by the Roberts and Schaeffer Engineering Corp. during the completion of the coal cleaning plant.

 Arthur’s business allowed him to meet hundreds of people. He served the community of Grant Town as mayor, council member and water commissioner. He belonged to the Fairmont Better Business Men’s Association and the Fairmont Elks Lodge. Arthur was Catholic by faith, and was a former member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Grant Town, where he served as president of Church Council and Eucharistic Minister of the Cup. He later became a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Fairmont.

Arthur enjoyed many outdoor activities, but his true passion was golf. He was an initial member of the Apple Valley Country Club in Fairmont.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Fairmont General Hospital, especially the Intensive Care Unit, and also the Critical Care Unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital. They would like to extend a special thank you to Arthur’s doctor and friend of many years, P. Kent Thrush.

Arthur’s family would also like to express their appreciation to a very special friend, Father John V. Ralph of Biloxi, Miss., and Arthur’s handyman and care giver, Alfred Stevens.

Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont. from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with a Vigil Service being held in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, with Father Robert Perriello as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with full military rites being performed at graveside by the Marion County Veteran’s Council.
