Clara Carpenter

Clarabel (Miller) “Clara” Carpenter, 89, passed away Saturday (Oct. 19, 2013) at the Village of Laurel Run, where she made her home for the last three years. She formerly lived in Cavetown, Md.

Born Dec. 23, 1923, in Rivesville, she was the daughter of the late Harry D. Miller Sr. and Irene Carolyn (Eby) Miller Thompson.

Clara went to school in Masontown and graduated with the Class of 1941. She loved going back for class reunions to spend time with old friends.

Clara worked with Life Support of the Red Cross and as a young woman baked biscuits for the president’s wife, Eleanor Roosevelt. She was a member of the Hagerstown Aglow, serving on the board and worked many jobs, Newberry’s Department Store and Holiday Acres Pharmacy. She taught Sunday school for girls 8-10 years and was a faithful member of Emmanuel Chapel. After retirement, she began to paint, doing many pieces for family and friends.

She loved spending time with her family making holiday dinners for everyone coming home.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Lewis Earl Carpenter; their son, Donald L. Carpenter (Dolores) of Hagerstown; daughters, Jeannie Graybill (Joe) of Hagerstown and Nancy Burgesser of Waynesboro; her brother, Harry D. Miller Jr. (Mary Lee) of San Francisco, Calif.; her uncle, Robert Eby (Dorothy) and sister-in-law, Eva Carpenter of Fairmont; grandchildren, Troy Burgesser (Renee) of Charlotte, N.C., Traza Chirdon (George), Steven Graybill (Brooke) of Hagerstown, and Kristie Blickenstaff of Chewsville; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ty Burgesser, Dylan Ennis of Charlotte, N.C., Codie, Dylan and Josie Blickenstaff of Chewsville, and Clayton, Faith and Aleese Chirdon of Hagerstown; great-grandson, Carson Blickenstaff; and many, many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Hayhurst of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two great-granddaughters, Sierra and Stephanie.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at J.L. Davis Funeral Home of Smithsburg, Md. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Smithsburg Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Clara to a charity of one’s choice. Remember her in love to all.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
