Molly Brain

Molly Jane Bayless Brain, 93, of Fairmont, passed away on Tuesday (Oct. 29, 2013) at the Genesis Morgantown Campus, Madison Center.

She was born June 18, 1920, in Wilburton, Okla., the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Leona B. McLarty Bayless.

Molly graduated from Anadarko, Okla., High School in 1938. She attended Anadarko Business College the following year and then moved with her family to Borger, Texas, in 1940. She was an employee of Phillips Petroleum Co. Refinery in Phillips, Texas beginning in 1940. She married Cecil L. Brain in 1947. He was employed at Dow Chemical Co. and was transferred in his job several times. Molly worked as a secretary in several of those cities.

When her husband retired in 1983, they moved to Fairmont to be near their daughter, Jane Clayton and her family. Molly was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairmont and was a member of the American Baptist Women’s Ministries and served as assistant treasurer. She served as a Deacon for several terms and also was on the Executive Board of the church.

Molly loved to play bridge and belonged to two bridge clubs, as well as the Woman’s Club of Fairmont. During their travels, she and her husband were able to visit all 50 states. She had many friends throughout the United States with whom she was in constant correspondence.

Molly is survived by two children, Jane Clayton and her husband Thomas of Morgantown and Steven L. Brain and his wife Carolyn of Plainview, Texas; four grandchildren, Timothy Brain of Plainview, Texas, Thomas Brain and his wife Marta of Seabrook, Texas, Tiffany Umstead and her husband Justin of Morgantown, and Julianna Clayton of Phoenix, Ariz.; three step-grandsons, Randall Phillips, Richard Phillip and Cory Embry, all from Texas; five great-grandchildren, Alexa, Caleb and Rebecca Brain of Seabrook, Texas, Kyler Brain of Plainview, Texas, and Molly Jane Umstead of Morgantown. She is also survived by a sister, Mary E. “Libby” Adams and her husband Wayne of Waco, Texas; two brothers, Ralph E. and his wife Melba of Brighton, Mich., and John E. Bayless and his wife Mary Lee of Borger, Texas; a sister-in-law, Carol Bayless, of Palm Desert, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Cecil L. Brain, who died in 1999, as well as her 15-month-old daughter, Jean Brain. She was also preceded by her step-grandson, Robert Phillips, and her brother, James W. Bayless.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Memorials and Gifts Committee of the First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554.

Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Brain will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont. The funeral will be held in the church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Valerie Gittings officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
