Valentino Zabolotny

Capt. Valentino J. Zabolotny, 88, of Hanna City, Ill., passed away Wednesday (March 27, 2013) at 8:58 a.m. at Farmington Country Manor Nursing Home, Farmington, Ill. He fought a courageous battle with strokes and Parkinson’s disease.

“Val,” as he was called, was born Jan. 26, 1925, in Grant Town, the son of Anthony and Agnes (Syrieka) Zabolotny. He served 14 years in the military. At the age of 17, he joined the Navy. He then transferred to the Army, then the Paratroopers, and finally the Air Force, where he became a fighter pilot. He served during WWII. He retired from the Air Force and became a pilot for Eastern Airlines and flew for them for 28 years.

Val married Rosanne Rote on Nov. 27, 1952, in Fairmont. Val is survived by his wife of Hanna City; two daughters, Mikell Lynn (George) Duncan of Hanna City and Valerie Hoge of Castle Rock, Colo.; one son, Mark (Jodi) Zabolotny of Rockwell, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Josephine Mazure and Frances Koch of Fairmont and Helen Poling of Centerville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Stanley, Walter and Jimmy; and one sister, Florence “Toolie.”

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no services.

Anderson-Sedgwick Funeral Home, Farmington, is in charge of arrangements.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
