Bernard ‘Bun’ Malone

Bernard “Bun” Earl Malone, 83, of Opekiska Ridge Road, Smithtown, passed away on Thursday (Aug. 22, 2013) at Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born in Opekiska on Oct. 18, 1929, a son of the late Wesley N. and Maude Swisher Malone.

He was a coal miner, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He attended Morgantown High School and was an active member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking, spending time with family and helping others.

He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Comp, and his son and daughter-in-law, Bernard Lynn and Sandra Malone all of Smithtown; four grandchildren and spouses, Christopher Comp, Megan and Dr. Brock Oliverio, Melissa and Sgt. William “Bill” White and Brandon and Jennifer Malone; and three great-grandchildren, Briauna Malone, Lillah Malone and Holden White.

Also surviving is his sister, Lula May Shaffer of Opekiska Road; two sisters-in-law, Betty Malone of Halleck Road and Bertha Mae Malone of Opekiska Road; one brother-in-law and spouse, Kenneth P. and Betty McBee of Opekiska Ridge Road; in addition, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bun was preceded in death by his wife, Edna May; a daughter, Virginia Ann in infancy; eight brothers, Walter, Robert, William, Wesley, Arthur, Lawrence, Richard and Edgar Malone; and three sisters, Emma Ellen Tinder, Virginia Moon and Lela Phillips.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, today from 5-8 p.m. and Monday from 1-8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at Pisgah United Methodist Church, 2718 Smithtown Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508.

The funeral service will be held at Pisgah United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Dr. Earl Klein and Pastor Tom Shepherd officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah Cemetery in Monongalia County.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
