Joan Margaret Morgan, 81, of Fairmont, died in the presence of the Lord, surrounded by her family at home, on Sunday (Aug. 25, 2013).
She was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Hoult, a daughter of the late James W. Latham and Florence E. Wiles Latham.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, O. Perry Morgan Jr., whom she married March 13, 1953.
Joan was a 1949 graduate of East Fairmont High School, and earned a degree in elementary education from Fairmont State College in May 1953. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women for several years at Diamond Temple United Methodist Church, later Gateway United Methodist Church.
She began teaching in 1967, and was the first public kindergarten teacher in Marion County, beginning at the fire department in Meadowdale and ending at the Kingmont Grade School (later part of Pleasant Valley School), where she retired in June 1998.
Joan is survived by her husband Perry and their four children, David Lee and his wife Cathy of Zanesville, Ohio, Robert Alan Morgan and his wife Louise Little Morgan of Fairmont, Sandra Morgan Fennell and her husband Chris Fennell of Arlington, Va., and Perry James Sr. and his wife Meg Berisford Morgan of Hilliard, Ohio.
Joan was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren, Megan Morgan Taylor and her husband Joshua Taylor, Molly Morgan Moroose and her husband Justin Moroose, Sarah Morgan Miller and her husband Sam Miller, Andrew Morgan and his fiancée Elizabeth Serratt, Grace Morgan Fennell, Perry Albert Fennell, Matthew Morgan, Katie Joan Morgan, Ashley Margaret Morgan, Julie Morgan, CJ Fennell and PJ Morgan. She had two great-granddaughters, Emery Rose Moroose and Madigan May Taylor. She also is survived by her brother, James W. Latham Jr. and his wife Susan of Lady Lake, Fla.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by a younger sister, Joyce Latham Muntzing and her husband Maynard Muntzing; and a sister-in-law, Judy Grove Latham.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Gateway United Methodist Church, Diamond Street, Fairmont, to help foster the children’s programing within the church.
Friends and family may call at Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 6-8 p.m. today and from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday. Joan will lie in state at Gateway United Methodist Church, Diamond Street, Fairmont, from 1-2 p.m. Sunday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday with Pastor Jeff Mayfield and the Rev. Martin Berisford officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum.
