John Brock

John E. Brock, 84, of Mannington, passed away Thursday evening (Nov. 7, 2013) at the Salem Center, Salem, with his family by his side, including his granddaughter, Sami.

He was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Marion County, son of the late Burnzey Ross and Mary Ann Woods Brock.

John is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Arlene Brock, with whom he was married to for 62 years; his son, Randy and Diane Brock of Inwood; and his daughters, Jill and Scott Yoak of Parkersburg, and Jan and Alan Triplett of Mannington. John is also survived one sister, Pauline Parrish of Idamay; several nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, Jodi, Todd, Sami, Sara and Cassie; great-grandchildren, Ava, Sidney, Quinn, Jayden, Justin, Desmond and Zayde, who is due any time now.

John was a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the A.F & A.M Lodge No. 31 in Mannington, as well as the Order of the Eastern Star No. 6. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites. John was a member of the UMWA for 63 years, having retired from Consol with 35 years of service. He was a member of the No. 9 Rescue Team and was last surviving member.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a loving grandson, Chad; three sisters, Ola, Ruth and Eva; and two brothers, Delbert and Ralph. John is also survived by his English Setter, who is now in the care of Doug Wolfe. John was an avid bird hunter, having trained many bird dogs.

Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Monday in the funeral home at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Greg Roth officiating. Burial will follow at the Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
