George Wilson Sr.

George Olonzo Wilson Sr., 89, of Fairmont, passed from this life Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2012) at Ruby Memorial Hospital, after a recent fall in his home.

He was born in Fairview on May 27, 1923, the son of the late Ward D. and Lizzie A. Brookover Wilson.

George was Methodist by faith. He was a 1941 graduate of Fairview High School. He served three years in the American Theater with the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon completion of his enlistment he operated a service station in Bellview before joining the Fairmont City Police Department, from which he retired as a lieutenant with 21 years of service in 1974. He was the oldest living retired police officer in the city. After retiring from the police department he obtained the job of outside foreman in charge of all supply, in and out of the mine, for the American Electric and Power Co. He retired in 1985.

He was a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. Acacia Lodge No. 157; 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonary S.J. of Clarksburg; and the Osiris Shriners of Wheeling. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed the fellowship with friends of the Watson Senior Citizens and ensured its continuation by serving as president for 20 years and loved every minute of it.

He enjoyed working outdoors. He and Ann joined a travel club for senior citizens and traveled all over the East Coast — when the bus left, they were on it. He felt that his life was blessed with a beautiful family and good health.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Martha Ann Pitzer Wilson, two daughters and sons-in-law, Jan Louise and Bronson Reese, and Kathy Lynne and Jerry Haymond, and his son, George O. Wilson Jr., all of Fairmont; his sister, Doris Lepley of Fairmont; seven grandchildren, Chad (Heather) Reese, Jason (Kimberly) Reese, Jennifer Lynne Haymond, Matthew Gerald Haymond, Beth Ann Haymond, Troy Wilson and Tyler Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Drake and Kilian Reese; seven nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law, Patricia (Curtis) Fawley, and brother-in-law, Jim (Connie) Pitzer, both of Florida.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Lepley.

George’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff and Dr. Alvin H. Moss and Dr. Glen Warden at Ruby Memorial for their loving care during this trying time.

They have requested that memorial contributions be made to: Shriners Hospital, C/O Erie Children’s Hospital, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505.

Friends may call at Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday. Services will be held in the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Friday with Pastor Larry Buckland officiating. Entombment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with full military honors and Masonic rites.
