Donald Garvin

Donald Alexander Garvin, 95, of Bethlehem, passed away on Friday (Nov. 22, 2013) at Liza’s Place.

He was born on March 29, 1918, on Garvin’s Lane in Marshall County, son of the late John Lemuel Sr., and Bess Hood Garvin.

He was a retired co-owner of Garvin’s Dairy, member of Masonic Lodge No. 5, Wheeling Union Chapter No. 1 RAM, Wheeling Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Osiris Temple, Florida Royal Order of Jesters. He was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling, and a World War II veteran, a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Corrine Augusta (Patty) Schafer; and brothers, Jack, Paul and Wayne.

Donald is survived by his daughters, Sylvia and her husband Dr. Donald Weiss of Florida, Marybeth and her husband Richard Pollack of Wheeling with whom he resided, and Donna Garvin of Vermont. Grandchildren include Kristen (Keith) Anderson, Amber (Andrew) Pollack-Berti, Don Michael Pollack, Elizabeth (Jeremy) Richter and Jonathan (Anna) Weiss; and great-grandchildren, Sarah and Samantha Anderson, Beckett Richter, Alexander Berti and Ava Weiss.

During the past year he still enjoyed taking hikes on the Garvin property. During the years, he had planted hundreds of pine, oaks, chestnuts and butternuts. These he loved to check up on and see flourish on the West Virginia hills.

A lover of the outdoors, his business side was equally exuberant with a passion for the stock market. When you could get him to sit, he would always have a story to share. Often these were humorous and reflective of the times in which he had lived. He would often surprise with a fresh story never before shared.

Friends will be received today from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling. A service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Charles D. LaPlaca officiating. Interment at the convenience of the family.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
