Walter R. Jones, 85, of Saltwell Road, Bridgeport, passed away Wednesday morning (May 1, 2013).
He was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Belington, a son of the late Everett B. and Dora Shafer Jones.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Wanda Y. Crayton Jones, whom he married March 23, 1946.
Also surviving are his son, Terry M. Jones and his wife Sharon of Bridgeport; a daughter, Melody A. Deems of St. Clairsville, Ohio; grandchildren, Matthew Jones and his wife Kathy of Bridgeport, Rebekah Jones of Morgantown, Sarah Jones of Lake Orion, Mich., Jeremy Deems and his wife Natasha of Belmont, Ohio, and Britteny Deems of St. Clairsville, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Austin Jones of Lake Orion, Mich., Savanah Jones of Bridgeport, Abby Jones of Bridgeport, and Aiden Deems of Belmont, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a son, Walter R. Jones Jr., and his son-in-law, James Deems. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his brothers, Dorsey, Dennis, Carl, Robert, Everett Clyde, Roy, John Andrew and the Rev. Wilson Dale Jones; and his sisters, Goldia, Nancy, Martha, Mary, Velma, Bernetta and Nellie Gay.
Walter graduated from Kasson High School, and after he and Wanda were married, he worked with the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram. He then started his trucking career, as the founder and owner of Walter R. Jones Trucking, until his retirement 50 years later. He was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church.
He loved the West Virginia mountains, being an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an accomplished string musician, with special love for the mandolin. Having grown up in the West Virginia mountains, he especially loved bluegrass and gospel music. He was a past member of the WVU Athletic Directors Club.

Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, from 2-8 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Saturday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dr. C. Michael Hopkins presiding. Interment will follow in Pifer Mountain Cemetery, Valley Furnace.
