David Smell

— David M. Smell, 66, of Colfax, passed away on Friday (May 17, 2013) at the Valley Health Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney.

He was born March 7, 1947, in Fairmont, a son of the late George Thomas and Virginia Mittendorf Smell. Dave was preceded in death on Nov. 7, 2011, by his wife of 40 years, Linda Geldbaugh Smell, whom he married on March 6, 1971.

Mr. Smell was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, in Fairmont. He was a 1965 graduate of East Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College prior to enlisting with the military.

Dave was a veteran with the United States Marine Corps having served during the Vietnam War where he served in Da Nag. Following his military career, he returned to Fairmont and worked with Owens-Illinois Glass Plant and later Alcan Aluminum. He retired in 2009 with Consol Energy, where he was a coal miner with more than 32 years of service.

He was a member of the VFW No. 7048 in Fairmont as well as the Retired Mine Workers Association. Dave joined the Broken Paddle Club in 1985 where he served as an elder. He enjoyed his annual father-daughter trough trip which he and his girls had attended for 21 years.

He was an avid season ticket holder for the West Virginia University football and basketball teams for more than 30 years. He enjoyed his weekly golf games with his close friends, George Johnston, Mike Satterfield, Fred Mays and Jimmy Watkins. He followed the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pirates closely.

His greatest joy was spending time with his four grandsons. Everyone who knew Dave respected and adored him.

Survivors include his two daughters, Beth and her husband Larry Scott of Scott Depot, and Lisa and her husband Patrick Blosser of Morgantown; grandsons, Brody Allen and Landon David Scott, Gavin Patrick and Garrett David Blosser; brother, Thomas and his wife Tina Smell of Kingwood; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Amos of Fairmont, and Jackie and her husband Gary Crandall of Boothsville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Karen Smell, and his brother–in-law, K. Brian Amos.

Serving as pallbearers will be Joseph Crandall, Dean Amos, Sam Crandall, Christopher Walker, Chuck Layman and Daniel Hudson.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 300 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554.

Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, on Monday from 1-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The funeral will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Matt Holbert officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum. Military funeral honors will be held at graveside by the Marion County Veterans Council.
