Lonnie “Pete” Ash Jr.

Lonnie L. (Pete) Ash Jr., 78, passed away at the Genesis Fairmont Campus Pierpont Center on Thursday (May 16, 2013) with his family by his side.

He was born March 14, 1935, in Rivesville, the eldest child of Lonnie and Mary Ash.

He graduated from Rivesville High School in 1953. He attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Lonnie then joined the Army, spending most of his military time in Germany, a country he enjoyed very much and made trips back to over the years. For the past 50 years he has made his home in Alexandria, Va., except for a few years that he lived in California. He worked for the federal government as a computer analyst until retirement, and then traveled doing contractual work.

Lonnie was an avid reader and enjoyed watching sports and was a huge fan of the Washington Redskins. He would call his siblings during football season to jokingly say whether he was wearing his Redskins ball cap or West Virginia University ball cap to cheer on whichever team was playing that day. They could also expect to have him call and shout “Go Mountaineers” on game day.

Lonnie is survived by two brothers and one sister, Philip Ash and his wife Diana, Donna Swann and husband Scott of Rivesville, and Mark Ash and wife Cathy of Fairmont; nieces and nephews include Tami Beall and Jim of Tennessee, Tina Johnson of South Carolina, Steve Ash and Stacy of Fairmont, Mary Ann Ash of Kentucky, Sarah Sago, Erin Smith and Patrick, Mark Ash Jr. of Fairmont, and Jennifer Tittle and John of Oregon; 14 great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carolyn Toothman Hardesty; nephew, Fred (Foxx) Toothman; niece, Teri Jones; and great-nephew, Lukas Jones.

The family wishes to thank Dr. James Malone, Sharon Senft, the staff at Genesis Fairmont Campus Pierpont Center, and People’s Hospice for their care for Lonnie.

The family requests no flowers; donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 122 South High St., Morgantown, WV 26505 or People’s Hospice, P.O. Box 1680, Clarksburg, WV 26302-1680.

Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, 2nd and Jasper streets, Rivesville, Monday from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m.-noon. The funeral will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at noon with Pastor Charles Madaus officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
