Charles Pethtel

Charles Joseph Pethtel, 85, of Mannington, passed away Thursday (June 13, 2013) at WVU Hospitals.

He was born in Glovers Gap on May 4, 1928, a son of the late James Lee Pethtel and Fannie Margaret Brummage Pethtel.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Jean Troy Pethtel, to whom he was married for 60 years; one daughter, Mrs. George “Eddie” (Ann) Neville of Metz; two grandchildren, Mrs. Tonya Lemley and husband Jimmy of Metz, and Jason Neville of Metz; two great-grandsons, Creed Neville and Gavan Neville; one brother, James Frank and Vivan Pethtel of Metz; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pethtel was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Joey” Pethtel; one brother, Clay Pethtel; and five sisters, Blanche King, Hattie Taylor, Clara Mae Freeland, Naomi Byers and Kate Talkington.

Mr. Pethtel was an Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was employed at D&G Machine. He was a member of the Mannington Volunteer Fire Department, having begun in 1959 to current, being an honorary member as of the present. He also served as the fire chief for several years. He was a member of Glover Gap Methodist Church until it closed.

Family and friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, from 2-8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Pastor Bill Coon officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Gardens in Burton. Members of the Mannington Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
