Gertrude Mary “Trudy” Straight, 89, of Barrackville, passed away quietly Friday (March 7, 2014) at Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She had been visiting her daughter for the winter.
She was born on July 9, 1924, in Newfoundland, Canada, daughter of the late William and Clotilda (Cloie) Williams Lidstone.
Trudy retired from Community Hardware in 2002. She was a very active member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, where she was involved with the Altar Society and the funeral dinner committee. She was a former member of All Saints Catholic Church in Barrackville, where she was actively involved with many functions including cleaning the church and making vestments for the priests and saying the rosary regularly.
She loved knitting, counted cross-stich, reading, going to breakfast or dinner with her church ladies, and traveling to Florida and Newfoundland to spend time with family.
She is survived by her children, Christine (Larry) Long of Ohio, Thomas (Frances) Straight of Barrackville and Cloie (Michael) Riley of North Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tom Lennon, Christopher Long, Paul Straight, Audriey Ellis, Nicole Potoczny, Edward Mullins and James Mullins, and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, William Lidstone of Canada, and Rudy Lidstone of Newfoundland; one sister, Clotilda (Cloie) Healy of Newfoundland; and a son-in-law, Richard Szabo.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Mullins-Szabo; two grandchildren, Kevin Mullins and Jackie Lennon; one brother, Burt Lidstone; one brother-in-law, Bren Healy; and one sister-in-law, Marie Lidstone.
Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave, Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. today with a vigil service being held at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, at 10 a.m., at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church with Father Robert A. Perriello as celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
