— George Yanego, 88, of Halleck Road Community, Fairmont, passed away Saturday (April 5, 2014) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born in Jordan on May 18, 1925, a son of the late Mike and Mary (Teray) Yanego.

George proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a coal miner by trade. He started his coal mining career at the Jordon No. 93 mine, moving onto Farmington No. 9 mine and retiring from Humphrey No. 7 mine with 33 total years of service. He was a member of the UMWA and an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his five brothers, Joe Yanego of Fairmont, Michael Yanego of Halleck Community, Frank Yanego and his wife Sheila of Fairmont, Paul Yanego of Halleck Community and Carl Yanego of Fairmont; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Yanego of Fairmont.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, including Tammy Fluharty and her husband Alan of Fairmont, Frank R. Yanego and his wife Carol of Grant Town, Brian Yanego and his wife Donna of Fairmont, John Yanego Jr. and his wife Carol of Morgantown, Mark Yanego and his wife Andrea of Fairmont, Cindy Wilson and her husband Dave of Fairmont, Donna Davis and her husband Steve of Virginia, and Becky Yanego Grantham of Fairmont; and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Yanego Sr. and Steve Yanego; one sister, Mary Campos; and a sister-in-law, Mary Yanego.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Bob Barker officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
