John King

— John Robert King, 72, of Fairmont, passed from this life Monday (Feb. 25, 2013) in his home under hospice care after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Fairmont on May 10, 1940, a son of the late Fred and Mattie A. Keller King.

Although asthmatic and unable to join the military, he was a very patriotic man and honored his country and the flag. He was a Christian by faith and served as custodian of Faith United Methodist Church for more than 14 years.

He had previously worked as a coal miner at Federal No. 1 for almost 20 years. He enjoyed electronics and graduated from a trade school where he learned to work on all types of electronics.

He was a very active member of the Marion County Auxiliary Police for several years and worked very closely with the county police. He enjoyed working on their radios, programming scanners and CB radios as well as televisions.

He had quite a reputation for fixing not only the county police radios but friends’ TV sets in their homes, and never charged them. He also enjoyed playing on his computer. His CB handle was “The SWAT.”

He was a member of U.M.W.A. District 31. In his spare time he enjoyed watching TV, especially wrestling, Andy Griffith, westerns and West Virginia University football.

Mr. King is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Karen Burton King; four sons and three daughters-in-law, John Wayne King and Tammy of Fairmont, Todd Burton King and Cecilia of Fairmont, Randall Robert King of Fairmont, and Tracy Gene King and Christy of Worthington; one brother, Fred King of Fairmont; eight grandchildren, Cordell, Becca, Wesley, Cara Jean, Joshua, Andrew, Casey and Jacob King; also several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Theo Anselene and Willa and Joe Mellie; also one sister-in-law, Doris King.

Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, Thursday from noon-6 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home at 6 p.m. with Rev. Larry Buckland and Rev. Clyde Beard officiating. Following the funeral, and at John’s request, his body will be cremated.
