Mr. William H. “Bill” Reid of Indian Land, S.C., died on Thursday (Feb. 28, 2013).
He was a member of Transformation 521 Church. He was born July 15, 1932 in Delbarton.
He was preceded in death by Richard and Bernice Pell Hollandsworth Reid. In addition to his father and birth mother of three years, he was also preceded in death by a wonderful loving stepmother of 62 years, Edythe L. Hagy Reid.
He was a retired federal coal mine inspector with 35 years of civilian service and two years in the United States Marine Corp. He was well known throughout the mining community in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Pennsylvania due to involvement in mine fires/explosions and recovery operations. He was an original charter member of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration’s first mine-rescue team, and he was also a member of the Veterans of Mine Rescue Pittsburgh District.
He retired in January 2005 as an education and training specialist after having positions of coal mine inspector, supervisor inspector and assistant district manager.
Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Sandra Faulkner Reid; daughters, Deborah and husband Richard Greene of Wheeling, and Patty Mucheck of Charleston; sons, Bill and wife Sis of Fairmont, Michael and wife Susan of Wheeling, Eli and wife Eva of Charlotte, N.C., and Erik and wife Dionne of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Donna Mezzico and Sandra Kay Cser; three brothers, Jim, Dick and Jack; also surviving are 14 grandchildren with the 15th due in September and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Palmetto Funeral Home, 2049 Carolina Place Drive, Fort Mill, S.C., with a funeral service following at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Transformation Church Building Fund, 9030 Northfield Drive, Fort Mill, SC 29707.
