Dale Shaffer

Times West Virginian

— Dale Vance Shaffer, 88, of Mannington and formerly of Elyria, Ohio, died in his home Monday evening (Oct. 8, 2012) surrounded by his loving wife, Edith, and his stepdaughters, Sue and Jean, and stepson-in-law, Harlen.

Dale was born at Little Whetstone on April 10, 1924, a son of the late Lloyd and Maude Hayes Shaffer. He was first married to Maxine Satterfield, who passed away in 1993. He married his “sweetie,” Edith Stevens Tanner Huffman, in 2000 and they had been happily married for 12 1/2 years.

Left to mourn his loss are his daughter, Patty (Art) Benoit of Elyria, Ohio; stepchildren, Randy (Janet) Tanner of Pennsylvania, Ronnie (Penny) Tanner of New Martinsville, Diana Sue (Harlen) Batson of Curtisville, and Pamela Jean (Barry) Moll of Elkins; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donny (Laura Marie) Satterfield of Ohio, Shirley (Harry) Satterfield of Salem, and Peggy Satterfield of Wyatt; and several nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a foreman for the Department of Highways in Ohio, having retired with 27 years’ service.

Dale was a big joker and loved driving his car. He took his “sweetie” for a drive every evening out into the country looking for deer. He was a member of Seven Pines Church.

Although Dale’s illness and death came quickly, Hospice was there for the family and they are much appreciated — Staci, Lisa and Marci especially. Thanks to the caring staff at Fairmont General Hospital and to Dr. Wolfe and his staff.

Friends may call at Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main St., Mannington, from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Barry Moll and the Rev. Dale Parrish officiating. The Rev. Brandon Moll, step-grandson, will serve as vocalist. Interment will be in Rugby Cemetery at Brown Helm Township, Ohio.
