Eleanor Bellott

Eleanor Jean Rice Bellott, 88, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully Sunday (Feb. 2, 2014) after a long period of decline.

She was born in Fairmont in 1925 to the late Everett Tetrick and Olive Crush Rice.

I’ve always wondered how you begin to summarize a person’s life in a few paragraphs in the newspaper. Although it will sound like the rest, it will be special for us who had the privilege of knowing “Jeannie.”

Our mom spent most of her life in Fairmont. Growing up, she was baptized in the Baptist church. She attended Fairmont Senior High School and West Virginia University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

After college, she went to work at Westinghouse in Fairmont, where she met the love of her life, a young engineer, E. Melvin Bellott Sr. They were married in 1946 at Grace Lutheran Church. She will now have her burial service at this same church.

While married, our parents were transferred to New Jersey. A son, Mel, was born, and then a daughter, Carol. Several years later the family was transferred to Arkansas where another son, Jerry, was born. Still with Westinghouse, we were transferred back to New Jersey.

Our mom was a wonderful homemaker, mother and wife. She was a person who always smiled and never complained. She loved to joke and send jokes to friends and family. One of the most admiral qualities that Mom had was that she never said a negative word about anyone or anything — a very hard example to follow.

In 1964, while living in New Jersey, Mom went to New York City to watch a game show called “Say When.” While she was there, she ended up auditioning for a future show and was selected. Jeannie was the champion of the price-guessing show for nearly two weeks and was one of the biggest winners ever on the show. One of the prizes Mom won was a boat. We had so much fun boating, fishing and skiing on different lakes and rivers.

Finally in 1967 our dad was transferred back to Fairmont to be the works manager of Westinghouse. Mom had gone full circle and was so happy to be back near her parents.

In Fairmont, Jean was active at Grace Lutheran Church, Bible studies, Fairmont General Hospital Auxiliary, Garden Club, Book Club, Bridge Club, the Fairmont Field Club and attending WVU athletic events. She was really a fan of all sports, but in particular Mom loved golf. She was always playing or practicing. She also loved roses and was constantly picking new colors to grow and constantly trying to keep the deer from eating them.

Another title to her credit was “Board Game Enthusiast.” Our mom was a sweet, kind and compassionate person. As an only child, she cared for her parents and then our dad for many years. Dad died in 1999 after 53 years of marriage.

Besides our dad, the loves of our mom’s life were her four grandchildren. She was a truly remarkable person who will be deeply missed but was ready to be at peace.

Besides her parents and husband, our mom was preceded in death by her Aunt Elizabeth Rice of Fairmont. She is survived by her three children, Carol Brautigam (Jack) of Morgantown, Emile Melvin Bellott Jr. (Frances Prickett) of Beverly, Mass., and Donald G. “Jerry” Bellott of Manville, N.J.; four grandchildren, Winston (Sarah) Bellott of Wakefield, Mass.; Spencer (Erin) Bellott of Wellesley, Mass.; Jamie Hartley of Atlanta, Ga., and John Brautigam of Juno Beach, Fla.; and cousins, Caroline (Richard) Christiansen of Destin, Fla.; Bobby Crush of Towson, Md., and Jerry Crush.

A heartfelt thanks to Linda and Karen Carpenter, Barb Victor, Susie Ballinger, Marilyn Riggi and the staff of Sundale Nursing home for all the love and kindness in caring for our mom. Linda and Karen Carpenter were instrumental in helping to keep our mom in her home for the past 10 years. We will be forever grateful to them.

The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The casket will lie in state at Grace Lutheran Church, 300 Gaston Ave., Fairmont, from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Matt Holbert officiating. The committal service will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Enterprise.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.fordfuneralhomes.com.
