Mary Germont

On Sunday (April 14, 2013), two months after celebrating her 102nd birthday, Mary Oliveto Germont breathed her final breath on this side of heaven and went to be with her Lord Jesus.

Mary remained vibrant and independent until the final year of her life, at which time her daughter Elaine and son-in-law Richard Gavette became her caregivers. Mary’s final request was that a public expression of her gratitude and heartfelt appreciation be extended to her longtime, devoted physician, Dr. Michael Schroering, and to his team of wonderful nurses at the Fairmont Clinic; they all made a positive difference in her life. Thank you, Dr. Schroering and staff, for your unfailing care, for which Mary’s family will be forever grateful.

Born on Feb. 12, 1911, Mary immigrated with her parents, Sam and Catherine (Belcastro) Oliveto, from San Giovanni in Fiore, Provincia Cocenza, Italy, accompanied also by her younger siblings, Tom Oliveto, Sarah (Poling) and Filamena (DeLuca). Her older sister, Rosa, remained in San Giovanni with her husband and children. Here in West Virginia the family grew with the addition of brother Louis and sisters Teresa, Virginia (Bailey), Esther (Heitz) and Irene (Lobuts).

Mary’s husband, Tony Germont, preceded her in death in January 1991.

Mary worked for many years as a cook, first at St. Peter’s Catholic School, then Fairmont Senior High School, and finally at the Bonanza restaurant. Mary will long be remembered for her wonderful breads, pepperoni rolls and Italian cookies, which she continued to bake long past her 100th birthday!

An open house reception was held in her honor to celebrate her 100th birthday in 2010, at which time she was able to see some of her nieces and nephews who traveled from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to be with her for that special occasion, as well as other beloved nieces and nephews who came to honor their much loved “Aunt Mary.” Many longtime friends added to make that celebration one that Mary talked about for many months.

Friends may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday with a vigil service to be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Thursday with Father Robert Perriello as celebrant. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mary’s family will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff of nurses and aides at Hospice Care Corp. of Fairmont, who lovingly provided care for Mary in her final weeks. She called these precious ladies her “angels.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., has long had a special place in Mary’s heart. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s, in her memory, at P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142; or to the Hospice Care Corp., 1408 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.domicofh.com.
