Robert ‘Bob’ Murphy

Robert W. “Bob” Murphy, 83, of Middletown, Ohio, died Saturday (April 13, 2013) following a brief illness. He passed away with his family at his bedside.

He was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Bayonne, N.J., the son of John Joseph and Katharine (Ort) Murphy.

He was a graduate of Our Lady Star of the Sea Elementary School and Holy Family Academy in Bayonne. After studying for one year at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., he received a Teagle Scholarship to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He served two years in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps, including 16 months based in Munich, Germany. He spent five years with Esso (now Exxon) as a financial analyst and trainer in Linden and Bayonne, N.J. He attended New York University Graduate School of Business for two years at night to earn his MBA.

Journalism had always interested Bob, and in 1958 he was hired by the owner-editor-publisher of the Bayonne Times, the local newspaper, as his assistant. He spent 13 years at the Bayonne Times, most of those years as general manager and vice president. When the Times was sold, he was hired by the West Virginia Newspaper Publishing Co. as vice president and general manager of two daily newspapers in Morgantown and neighboring weeklies. After six years, he was hired by Thomson Newspapers as publisher of the Times West Virginian in Fairmont. Three years later, he transferred to the Middletown (Ohio) Journal, where he was publisher for 12 years, and then the Journal-News in Hamilton, where he was publisher for seven years.

Bob was an avid reader and lifelong learner; he took classes at the University of Dayton following his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed good company and interesting conversation with friends old and new. He was an outstanding athlete, having excelled in baseball and basketball into his 20s. He was a terrific tennis player and enjoyed playing with good friends and family. Bob was a true gentleman, a devoted husband, great father and proud grandpop. He always put family first.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Jane (Apel) Murphy; six loving children, Robert J. Murphy of Dublin, Ohio, Mary Beth Murphy of Washington, D.C., Cathy Malone and her husband David of Charlotte, N.C., Frank Murphy and his wife Kathy of Mason, Ohio, Maureen Doherty and her husband James of Summit, N.J., and Mike Murphy and his wife Megan of Hilliard, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert and Sarah Malone, Emily and Michael Murphy, Thomas and Nicholas Doherty, and Joseph and Henry Murphy; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his brother, John J. Murphy; sister, Kathleen Quinlan; and brother-in-law, John Quinlan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church, 201 Clark St., Middletown, with Father John Civille as celebrant. Family will receive friends from 9:30-11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, in care of Holy Family Parish, 201 Clark St., Middletown, OH 45042.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
