Louis Murphy

Louis Murphy, 89, of Fairmont, entered into eternal rest and peace Friday (Nov. 29, 2013) after a long, lingering illness.

He was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Birmingham, Ala., to the late Raymond and Marie Murphy.

After attending Dunbar High School, Brother Louis moved to Detroit and graduated from high school there. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps where he served as an airplane mechanic during World War II. He returned to Detroit, where he was employed as a recreational supervisor for the City of Detroit, a former security guard, and later a retired parking attendant from Fairmont State College.

Brother Murphy confessed Christ at an early age and, after returning to Fairmont, became a member of Morning Star Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading and doing anything and everything with Mary. He was also an avid sports fan, especially for the Detroit teams.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 23 years, Mary Quarterman; two stepchildren, Beverly and Ralland Quarterman, both of Fairmont; two daughters-in-law, Marilyn and Robbie Murphy, both of Detroit, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Carol Rice of Fairmont; three brothers-in-law, Charles (Jean) Hickerson of Cleveland, Ohio, Jerome (Etta) Hickerson, and Leroy (Dorothy)Hickerson, all of Fairmont; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Louis Murphy Jr. and Robbie Murphy; one sister and brother-in-law, Mattie (Alonzo) Murphy Woods; and one grandson, Ronnie Murphy.

Visitation will be held at Morning Star Baptist Church from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service at 1 p.m. Pastor Wesley Q. Dobbs will be officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens with full military honors being presented by the Marion County Honor Guard.
