Zelda Gay Armstead

Zelda Gay Holloway Armstead, of Fairmont, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (July 15, 2012).

The ones we love remain with us, for love itself lives on, and cherished memories do not fade because a loved one is gone.

Gay was born Feb. 25, 1941, one of 17 children, to the late Aaron and Hazel (Dalton) Holloway of Fairmont. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Lee Armstead of Fairmont.

Gay attended Dunbar High School. She was a past employee of Owens-Illinois and the Holiday Inn in Fairmont. She was an outgoing and fun-loving person to be around. Gay was a wonderful cook, and prepared many meals for her family and friends while sharing many good times with them. She was also a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Fairmont.

Gay is survived by a son, Anthony Lee Armstead, his wife Donna and their daughters, Ashlee and Amberlee Armstead; a son, Michael DeVaughn Armstead of Cumberland, Md., and his daughter Tawndalay Robinson, and Michael’s grandchildren, Laydrian, Mike and Nate Robinson, and Michael’s daughter, Seretha Hall of Morgantown. Gay is also survived by a granddaughter, Makelle Paige. She has established many great memories with her devoted companion, Floyd Lee, who resides in Hampton, Va. She is also survived by five sisters, Betty Sorsby of Chicago, Gladys Blake of District Heights, Md., Juanita Brown of Charlotte, N.C., Connie Beans of District Heights, Md., and Sharon Sue Harper of Silver Springs, Md.; and two brothers, William Holloway of Chicago, and Roy Holloway of Columbia, S.C. She also leaves behind nephews and nieces who were raised as her brothers and sisters: James “Jimmy” Holloway of Las Vegas, Nadine Thompson of Oak Park, Ill., Renee Deloatch of College Park, Md., and (deceased) the Rev. Stevie Holloway of Fairmont; and a stepdaughter, Doris Armstead-Turner. A loving reference goes out to numerous nieces and nephews who have shared many great times and memories with Gay.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Gay was preceded in death by four sisters, Carolyn “June” Holloway, Barbara Green and Helen Richardson, all of Fairmont, and Ida Sanders of Chicago; and five brothers, Aaron Holloway Jr. of Fairmont, Robert “Bob” Holloway of Clarksburg, George Holloway of Grant Town, Richard Holloway of Morgantown, and Clyde Holloway of Fairmont.

The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Lelia Marie Thornton, Marie Fluker, Harold Barner, Joe Brown and Annette Taylor; also a very sincere thanks to family member and caregiver, Yvette “Twinkles” Harston and her son Jamere for their patience in caring for and assisting Gay; and a heartfelt thanks to Suzanne Holloway-Smith of Atlanta for her extensive time spent assisting Gay’s family.

Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. Friday. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Fairmont, with the funeral service being held at 2 p.m. in the church with the Rev. John McKinney officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
