Adeline Sutphin

V. Adeline King Sutphin, 91, of Monumental Community, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Pleasant Acres Christian Haven Nursing Home in Fairmont.

She was born March 11, 1922, in Barrackville, a daughter of the late Dock L. and Mabel Ice Wilson and was a descendant of the Ice family (William “Indian Billy” Ice and Adam Ice that settled in Barrackville).

Adeline was a retired employee of the City of Fairmont and a former employee of the Marion County Board of Education Finance Office.

She was a member of the Barrackville Church of Christ and taught children’s classes, ladies’ Bible classes and vacation Bible school. A graduate of Barrackville High School, she was a high school cheerleader and wrote the Barrackville Alma Mater.

She attended Fairmont Business College and was a member and player in the Marion County Girls Basketball League. As a homeroom mother at Barrackville High, Adeline had the privilege of helping chaperone all four sons’ (Binky, Jon, Randy, Kerry King) senior class trips to Washington, D.C.

She was an avid fan of West Virginia University football and basketball and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. A golfing enthusiast, she was a member of the Green Hills Country Club Ladies Association and a member of the Mountaineer League. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles and sending cards to friends and relatives.

She had been coordinator of the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Pledge Center in Fairmont and along with son Kerry (who had muscular dystrophy), spearheaded several fundraisers in Marion County. Adeline received the Citation Merit Award from Muscular Dystrophy Association of America Inc., a plaque from Marion County Muscular Dystrophy for distinguished service 1971-1980, and in 1978 she received the Kenneth Heiges Award from the State of West Virginia chapter for the most outstanding worker in 1978. She also was elected first vice president of the association and given a position on the state chapter’s executive board.

Adeline was a member of the Women Workers for Pleasant Acres Christian Haven Association and a member of the Board of Education Retired Secretaries Association.

Survivors include three sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert M. (Binky) and Nancy King of Monumental, Jon L. and Kathy King of Portsmouth, Va., and Randy and Barbara King of Monumental; one stepson, James and Jane Sutphin of Enfield, Conn.; one stepdaughter, Pam Hanna and her husband Joe of Port Angeles, Wash.; one brother and sister-in-law, Gary P. and Etta Lee Wilson of Manassas, Va.; seven grandchildren, Troy King of Morgantown, Brent and Swapna King of Fairmont, Heath and Dawn King of Monumental, Heather and Kenny Morris, Kerri and Joey Thorne of Monumental, Josh King, Penny Jerrell, Portsmouth, Va.; two step-grandsons, Cameron and Connor Sutphin of Enfield, Conn.; nine great-grandchildren, Colby and Ty Thorne of Monumental, Caden Morris of Monumental, Tanner and Bailey King of Barrackville, Syndey Panu and Shaila Addison King of Fairmont, Cody and Madison Jerrell of Portsmouth, Va.; two nieces, Sue Wilson of Plainview, Minn., and Tara Crum of Bealeton, Va.; one nephew, Rob Wilson of Woodbridge, Va.; one great-niece, Erin Wilson of Plainview Minn.; two great-nephews, Matt Wilson of Woodbridge Va., and Chuckie Crum of Bealeton, Va.; and her close friend, Ted Toothman of Barrackville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Kerry King; husbands, Raymond L. Sutphin and Robert M. King Sr.; one brother and sister-in-law, Ivin F. and Alliece Wilson; and her nephew, Jerry Wilson.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Hospice Care Corp. and Pleasant Acres Christian Haven for the loving care they provided Adeline.

Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, R.C .Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Sutphin will lie in state at the Barrackville Church of Christ from noon to 1 p.m. Monday. The funeral will be held in the church at 1 p.m. Monday with Evangelist Steve Snider officiating. Interment will follow at Monumental Cemetery in Monumental.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
