Loretta Taylor

Loretta E. Taylor, 65, of Mount Lebanon, Pa., took heavenly flight to the Lord on Monday (April 14, 2014) in St. Clair Hospital, Mount Lebanon, Pa.

She was born May 2, 1948, in North Charleroi, Pa., a daughter of the late William H. and Kathryn Eloise Jefferson.

Mrs. Taylor was a 1966 graduate of Bentworth High School and a 1969 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She also received a Masters of Science degree from West Virginia University and advanced Ph.D. course work.

She was employed as a teacher from 1972 to 1976 at the John F. Kennedy Youth Center, Bureau of Federal Prisons. From 1976 to 1988 she worked as a Spanish teacher for the Marion County School District and from 1992 to 2011 in the North Hills School District until retirement. She held a professional teaching certification in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She had a great passion for education and love of children.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of PSEA-R, American Association Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, American Council of Teaching Foreign Language, North Hills Retired Teachers Group, Mount Lebanon Library Spanish Conversation Group and the Black Association of South Hills.

She was a full member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Bentleyville, affiliated member of Warren United Methodist Church, Pittsburgh, and attended Bethel United Methodist Church, Lower Burrell, where her husband is pastor. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher.

Mrs. Taylor enjoyed reading, needlepoint, sewing, traveling and the performing arts.

On Aug. 4, 1973, in Bentleyville, Pa., she became the beloved wife of the Rev. Paul D. Taylor, who survives.

Surviving in addition to her husband is a daughter, Christina D. Taylor of Laurel, Md., and son, Paul D. Taylor II of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Katherine Jones of White Lake, Mich., Joyce White (Ossie) of Bowie, Md., and Linda Washington of Green Tree, Pa.; three godchildren, Catherine Tate, Monique Washington and Gabrielle Washington; one uncle, John Taylor of Akron, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Mary (McArthur) Tate of Fairmont; two brothers-in-law, Fred Taylor of Fairmont and Daniel (Diane) Taylor of Sterling Heights, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Patricia Ikard, Betty Finch and Rosemarie Franklin; one brother, William H. Jefferson Jr.; and two nieces, Cheryl and Lois Ikard.

Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. today in Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main St., Bentleyville, Pa., and on Saturday from 10-11 a.m., the hour of services, in Grace United Methodist Church, Coal Center, Pa., with the Rev. William Meekins Jr. and the Rev. Kathy Barnhart of the United Methodist Church officiating, with Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton participating. Interment will follow in Beallsville Cemetery, Beallsville, Pa.
