Leona Leach

Leona Catherine Harper Leach, 92, of Simpson, passed away on Wednesday (April 16, 2014) at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on June 9, 1921, in Pendleton County (Seneca Rocks), a daughter of the late Mason and Kate Harper.

Surviving are three daughters, Marlene Leach of Fairmont, Luella Burton and husband David of Simpson, and Clarenda Fragale and husband Anthony of Parkersburg; five grandchildren, Jennifer Londeree and husband Dan of Huntington, Scott Burton and wife Rebecca of Alabama, Aaron Burton of Virginia Beach, Mark Fragale and wife Megan of Morgantown, and David Fragale of Columbus; and four great-grandchildren, Emma and Claire Londeree, Elias and Eden Burton. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Adolphus T. Leach, on March 30, 1994. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roscoe and Wright Harper; and one sister, Norma Black.

Ms. Leach was a graduate of Circleville High School and Davis & Elkins College. She also attended Fairmont State, West Virginia University and Marshall. She began a teaching career in Pendleton County in 1944, and retired after 21 years of service from Taylor County, teaching at Flemington Elementary School. She was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and Taylor County Retired Teachers Association. Ms. Leach was also a member and past Sunday school teacher at Union Baptist Church, a member of the American Baptist Women, Deacon Emeritus, and a member of the VFW Post 3081 Ladies Auxiliary.

The family will receive friends at the Union Baptist Church in Simpson, today from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the church with Sam Myers and Chad Griffith officiating, and eulogy by Scott Burton. Interment will follow in the Simpson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to any of the following: Union Baptist Church, Simpson Cemetery, Amedysis Hospice or the Flemington Emergency Squad.

The Bradley J. Mayle Funeral Home in Flemington is honored to be serving the Leach family during this time.
