JoAnn VanGilder

JoAnn VanGilder, 76, of Hallhurst Road, Fairmont, passed away Tuesday afternoon (April 30, 2013) in Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 29, 1936, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Russell Denver and Nora M. (Anderson) Snyder.

Mrs. VanGilder was a member of Central United Methodist Church. She was employed by the Marion County Board of Education as a library aide, working at Jayenne Elementary School and White School and retiring at Fairmont Senior High School with 13 years of service.

She was an avid tennis player, active with the Fairmont Field Club. She truly enjoyed her bridge club, crafts and hobbies. She was active with the Mountaineer Miniatures Club.   

Survivors include her husband, William R. VanGilder of Fairmont; a daughter, Ava and her husband Doug Harris of Mebane, N.C.; two sons, Jeffrey and his wife Nancy VanGilder of Charleston, and Jay VanGilder of Boyds, Md.; five grandchildren, Jason and his wife Karen Harris of Buckhannon, Sara VanGilder and John VanGilder, both of Charleston, and Miranda VanGilder and Beau VanGilder, both of Boyds, Md.; and a sister, Jean and her husband Arlan Boughman of Navarre, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Snyder and Minor “Woody” Woods.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from 5-8 p.m. today and from 2-3 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 3 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Hal Hevener officiating. Entombment will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Peggy Edwards, 15 Troy Lane, Fairmont, WV 26554, for the Mountaineers Miniatures Club.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
