Frances Higginbotham

Frances Higginbotham, 97, formerly of Four States, passed away April 1, 2013, at Tygart Center at Fairmont Campus.

She was born Aug. 20, 1914, in Shinnston, to the late William Bart and Anna Ribel Bart.

She also was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Higginbotham II, on Jan. 11, 1976.

Frances is survived by her granddaughter, Christina Murrin of Crested Butte, Colo.; nephews, Bill Myers and his wife Joyce of Shinnston, and Jim Myers and his wife Patty of Washington, Pa.; and nieces, JoAnn Landers and her husband Bill of Rock Hill, S.C., Lee Ann Romeo and her husband Michael of Shinnston, Sherry Hillman of Mississippi, Betty Cunningham of Farmington, Jody Johnston and her husband Jim of Pennsylvania, Judy McGuire of Colorado, and Jacqueline Boff and her husband Kenneth of Florida.

In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was preceded by her son, Dr. Frederick Higginbotham III; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Higginbotham; brothers, James Bart and Joe Bart; and sister, Mary Bart Myers.

Frances graduated from Shinnston High School. She became a proprietor of the Four States Recreation Center in 1949 and operated the business for more than three decades. She was well-loved by the community and affectionately called “Aunt Frances” by children of the area. She was always ready to help anyone in need.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
