George Orwig

FAIRMONT — George Thomas Orwig, 86, of Fairmont (Bellview community), passed from this life Saturday (July 13, 2013) at the Home Away From Home in Grafton.

He was born in Watson on Dec. 11, 1926, a son of the late Herbert H. and Edna May Johnson Orwig.

George was a quiet and gentle man who pretty much stayed to himself and his family. He did, however, enjoy a few things for himself. He enjoyed flying to the point that he built his own plane; he was an avid golfer; he always had some type of mechanical project going; he loved working with his hands. He enjoyed boating and fishing, and had built his own canoe. He also enjoyed playing cards and quite often frequented casinos. More than anything else he enjoyed traveling with his wife.

He was a Christian by faith. He retired from the Consolidation Coal Co. with 41 years of service, most of which were at the Loveridge mine. He was a member of UMWA District 31. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of VFW Post 629 for many years. He was also a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mr. Orwig is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, George Marcus “Mark” and Barbara Orwig of Farmington; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Robert L. and Martha Orwig of Sanford, Fla., and Jeanette Orwig of Buckhannon; seven grandchildren, Shirley Stull, and Tim, Andy, Katy, Ryan, Matt and Adam Orwig; six great-grandchildren, Danielle and Anthony Stull, and Connor, Rylan, Quincy and Jed Orwig, and one on the way; five nieces and nephews, Susan, Sandra, Michelle, Michael and Steve Orwig; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Orwig; a son-in-law, Leon Redmond; and former daughter-in-law, Rose Ann Orwig.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Waneta Pinson Orwig, in July 2004; his daughter, Randy Lane Redmond; his son, Jennings D. Orwig; and one brother, James A. Orwig.

George chose cremation as his method of disposition. There will not be any visitation. A funeral procession will leave Frey Home For Funerals, 320 Madison St., Fairmont, at 10:10 a.m. Thursday to proceed to the West Virginia National Cemetery for a committal service with full military honors being presented by the U.S. Navy and the Marion County Honor Guard.

Condolences may be sent to the family at fhff320@aol.com or freyhomeforfunerals.com.
