James Hess

James David Hess, 70, of Worthington, passed from this life Thursday (July 25, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital from complications with lung cancer and pneumonia.

He was born in his current home on Jan. 1, 1943, a son of the late Albert Roy and Ethel Goldie Furbee Hess.

Jim attended Monongah High School, where he was known as Houdini. He was a Christian by faith and knew his Bible better than most people thought. He was rather small in stature but a very strong and powerful man.

He was the owner/operator of the Hess Construction Co., which he and his wife started in 1969. He had a 1950 Ford, which he enjoyed researching and working on. When his sons were young, he served as a baseball coach with the Little League.

He enjoyed watching the Discovery Chanel, tinkering and fixing stuff, going to his camp at Cabins with his family, fishing and, more than anything else, he especially loved when the grandchildren, who knew him as “Pa,” were around. He was a worker man who felt lost when he wasn’t doing something.

Mr. Hess is survived by his loving wife and partner in so many ways of 50 years, Diana Hoffman Hess; two daughters, Debbie Anderson and her husband Terry of Worthington, and Carla Hess and her fiancée Mark Joseph of Belington; two sons and daughters-in-law, James D. Hess Jr. and Kristin of Worthington, and Jeff D. and Christy Hess of Farmington; one sister, Dotty Kropog of Ohio; eight grandchildren, Nicole Redmond; Michele, Shawn and Geoffrey Anderson; and Brody, Noah, Sophiona and Taylor Hess; three great-grandchildren, Bryson Redmond, Nathan Redmond and Alyssa Grabb; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his in-laws, Helen Hess of Bellview, Clifford and Dorothy Hoffman of Fairmont, Betty and John Burgess of Maryland, Martin Hoffman of Fairmont and Beverly Hoffman of Rivesville.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Max R. Hess, Albert R. and Joyce Hess, Charles C. Hess Sr., John and Katherine Hess, and Robert Hess; also three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Grace and Hazel Fisher, Betty Wright, and Jessie Eliason and Gary Hoffman.

Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel, which he and his sons built 12 years ago), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, today from 5-8 p.m.; Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m.-noon. Services will be held in the funeral home Monday at noon, with Father Douglas Sutton as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel cemetery.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
