Robert Harris

Robert Albert Harris, 75, of Monongah, passed away Monday (Dec. 2, 2013) at Fairmont General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Fairmont, Ice’s Run Community, on Jan. 7, 1938, a son of the late Albert and Zela (Brown) Harris.

Robert proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. He was retired from the Marion County Board of Education where he worked as a painter with 32 years of service. He was Baptist by faith and a member of Monongah Baptist Church. He loved life and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching “Little People, Big World,” wrestling and Joel Olsteen on television.

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Virgie Mae (Anderson) Harris of Fairmont; two sons, William “Bill” Harris of Monongah and John R. Harris and his wife Robin of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two grandchildren, Joseph Harris and Justin Harris of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Also surviving is a sister, Helen Collins of Monongah; a half-sister, Hazel Mae White of Weston; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Harris and Raymond Harris; and two half-brothers, Harold Bailey and Everett Bailey.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Thursday, with Pastor Charles W. Chipps officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
